Beck Buechel
contralto, drag king, collaborator,
gilbert & sullivan enthusiast
Hi there! Thanks for stopping by. My theater education truly began when I first watched the Into the Woods pro-shot from 1989. I earned degrees in Vocal Performance from Illinois Wesleyan University and The University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since arriving in Chicago in 2017, I have felt called to completely disregard the gender binary on (and off) the stage. Some favorite past roles include: Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance (Victorian Lyric Opera Company), Marcello in La Femme Boheme (Ouroboros Opera/Valkyrie Ensemble), The Narrator in Murder Ballad (Towle Theater), Leonetta in Hildegard: The Rupertsberg Tour, Lancelot in Camelot (Janus Concert Series), and Joan in Fun Home (Towle Theater).
I moonlight as Mx. O'Lydian in drag and burlesque shows around Chicago. Recently, I directed, hosted, and performed in Glitter and Be Gay, an operatic drag show produced by Valkyrie Ensemble. In 2021, I produced Savoyeurs! a virtual Gilbert and Sullivan drag show, featuring an international cast. I am a member of the Ring of Keys Network and a recent addition to the board of the Valkyrie Ensemble. When I am not on stage, you will likely find me at home reading tarot or rhinestoning costumes with my wife and two perfect cats.
